The idea: I make a Zine!
Why a Zine?
When I look at my Instagram page, I always think to myself, how can anyone be interested in this? There are portraits next to street photos, landscape pictures next to Idontknowwhattheyare. There are digital images next to analogs. You can find pictures from 35mm, medium format and large format cameras. I want to do something where the images somehow fit together – belong together.
What is a Zine?
For those who feel like me when I saw a Youtube video of: Eduardo Pavel Goye I asked myself: the Heck … is a Zine? Here a brief explanation. A zine is something like a small photo book. The term comes from the English word “MagaZINE”. But you don’t print one, you print 50 or 100 or 1000, and you can give them away or sell them.
The feeling of holding something printed in your hands
The digital image is something ephemeral. It can be found on a cell phone, in a Lightroom library somewhere on a hard drive, or even in a cloud. In the past, the self-developed print always had something magical for me. I can hold the printed image in my hands. It looks different in the light than it does in the dark, and it’s just there – existing. So it is very important for me that I can hold the result in my hands
Why a series?
Hardly any picture of mine has anything to do with the next. Fortunately, I am an amateur and can therefore do artistically what I want. I do not have to sell anything, to make a living from it. On the one hand I love this freedom. On the other hand, I admire photographers who manage to create a great series or story of images that somehow belong together and often even publish them in a coffee table book.
Can I also do something like this?
For me, that’s a great challenge. And that’s what I love.
A series or story is the next level of photography for me. It’s more than just walking around and taking pictures.
Series… But how do you do that?
What can I photograph that somehow belongs together. As an amateur and family man, I have only a limited budget and limited time available, so something like “2 years living with leaf ants in the Amazon” falls away (Would also not be mine).
Just do it:
Perfectionism is often one of my biggest obstacles. I have learned for myself that: “Just start!” is much better than “someday I’d like to….”. By the way, I know that I’m not the only one with this problem 😉
So how do I get the series idea just right?
Same Look:
- All Film (Silbersalz35 250D)
- Same Colorgrading
- All 28mm
Same area:
That’s where our planned Wales vacation came in handy.
Same mood.
That is the most important thing now. If I already do without a theme like: “Door knocker at full moon” the first time, the connecting element must already have weight. Here it should be the mood. What mood do I mean? I mean the feeling that I feel when I see the picture, or the scenery I just photographically captured. How do you describe mood and what mood do I mean? Cinema, Moody, emptiness or simply Zen. What that can be for you that you have to decide for yourself. In my case it is something from the above terms.
So let’s go on vacation and the photographic adventure: “My Wales Zine”.
To be continued…..
